In Chapter 19, Sai Baba says his Guru was 'desireless' but then immediately mentions the Guru asked him for two paise. Isn't this a contradiction? Why would a saint who has no need for gold ask his disciple for money?

📖 Chapter 19

This apparent contradiction is addressed directly within the teachings found in Chapter 19. While Shri Sai's Guru did indeed ask for two paise, the text clarifies that one should not let doubt enter the mind over this. The Guru was 'Purnakam,' or one whose desires were fulfilled, and had no use for worldly money. Chapter 19 explains that the two paise were symbolic and represented something far more valuable: Faith (Nishtha) and Patience (Saburi). Baba states, "Faith (Nishtha) and Patience (Saburi)—these were the two paise, nothing else; I gave them to him then and there, and thus my Guru-Mother was pleased with me." The request was a lesson, not a transaction for material wealth.
