If the Chavadi was so awful, how was staying there actually a blessing for Amir?

📖 Chapter 22

Despite the terrible physical conditions, staying in the Chavadi turned out to be a great spiritual blessing for Amir Shakkar. Chapter 22 explains that because of his assigned location, Baba's vision, or darshan, happened automatically and without effort. Amir could easily see Baba during His morning alms rounds and again every evening when Baba would come in front of the Chavadi. Furthermore, on the alternate nights Baba stayed in the Chavadi, only a nominal curtain and a plank door separated them, allowing them to talk privately after the other devotees left. This close and firm companionship with Sai was a rare benefit not easily enjoyed by others.
