Sai Baba clarifies this point directly in Chapter 39. While a conventional interpretation suggested these actions lead to being instructed in Knowledge, Sai Baba provides a deeper meaning. He explains that Knowledge itself is a state of realization, beyond the scope of instruction. The true purpose of prostration, questioning, and service is to gain the Guru’s grace. This grace is essential for the disciple to receive help in removing the great delusion, which is the belief in the reality of the visible world as the play of Maya. These devotional acts are the means to sweep away the darkness of Ignorance, which then allows the self-existent truth, 'Brahman is Consciousness', to reveal itself.
If Knowledge cannot be taught, what is the purpose of serving the Guru, prostrating, and asking questions?
