I read about a devotee named Appasaheb who promised to give ten rupees. Can you explain why he made this promise and what happened when a fakir came to collect it?

📖 Chapter 33

Appasaheb's story in Chapter 33 illustrates the struggle between intention and action. He felt that the single rupee his family had given was insufficient and declared, "Had I been there, I would have given ten times more." He thus felt indebted by this unspoken promise to give ten rupees. As the chapter recounts, a fakir, implied to be Baba in disguise, arrived on the very day Appasaheb made this resolution. However, because the fakir seemed like a stranger, Appa became suspicious. Despite having six rupees on hand, he hesitated and did not offer the money, showing how even a firm resolve can be challenged by doubt at the critical moment.
