Kashiram was attacked by thieves because he was carrying a small bundle they believed contained treasure. In reality, as chapter 0 explains, it was just powdered sugar that he carried to feed ants, following the advice of a saint named Janakidas Baba. Because the bundle was dear to him, he refused to give it up. In the ensuing fight, he managed to pick up a dropped sword and kill two of the thieves before being struck down himself. For this courageous act, Kashiram later received a sword as a gift from the Bombay government. Despite his severe injuries, he had full faith in Maharaj and insisted on being taken to Shirdi for healing rather than a hospital.
How was Kashiram recognized for his bravery, and what led to the confrontation with thieves in the first place?
