Chapter 50 describes a specific cosmological process. It begins with Brahman becoming 'qualified' (shabal) by Avidya, or ignorance, which allows it to be expressed as 'Sat' (Existence). From this expressible Brahman, the Unmanifest (Avyakta) emerged. Following this, the Great Principle (Mahat-tattva) came forth, and from its womb, egoism was born. The five Tanmatras, or subtle elements, then arose within the ego, and the five great elements were formed within them. Finally, as Chapter 50 explains, the entire world was born within the womb of these five great elements, making the world itself a characteristic form of Avidya-Maya, the worldly illusion.
