How does one's inner attitude affect their experience with a Guru, based on the story of Boss Dharamsee?

📖 Chapter 35

The story of Boss Dharamsee in Chapter 35 is a classic demonstration of how one's inner attitude shapes their spiritual experiences. Dharamsee arrived with a skeptical and judgmental attitude, thinking, "If he is a saint, how does he not know That I do not like these grapes?" This inner resistance created a problem for him, making him feel "troubled in his heart." As this negative attitude arose, Baba responded by giving him even more of the grapes he disliked, challenging his ego directly. However, the moment Dharamsee surrendered his will and obeyed Baba's command to eat, his experience was transformed. The grapes became seedless, and his entire state of mind was "stunned." As Chapter 35 describes, his ego dropped away, and "love for the saint was born." This shows that while a Guru may know our inner thoughts, our experience is contingent on our willingness to surrender our ego and preconceptions.
