How does Chapter 17 describe the role of human effort (Purushartha) in overcoming worldly suffering and choosing the right path?

📖 Chapter 17

Chapter 17 emphasizes that the true purpose of human life, or Purushartha, is to consciously discard the pleasant path of Preya and honor the good path of Shreya. This requires significant human effort. The chapter explains that this effort is born out of great fortune when a person, exhausted by the three unendurable torments of worldly existence (Samsara), begins to seek a way to end the cycle. As mentioned in Chapter 17, one must then actively struggle for the sake of Shreya by strengthening the intellect to resist obstacles. This effort is likened to the steadfastness of Dattatreya and is crucial for making the difficult choice between the two paths, a choice that a person without discrimination is incapable of making correctly.
