According to Chapter 17, the journey towards Shreya begins when a person, exhausted by the suffering and unendurable torments of worldly existence (Samsara), starts searching for a way to stop this cycle. This fortunate arising of thought marks the birth of true human effort (Purushartha). The chapter advises that to follow this path, one must first dissolve the great obstacle of beginningless ignorance, or Maya, which is as false as a mirage. It also stresses the need to dig out the roots of obstacles like desire, hope, and cravings for seen and unseen enjoyments. This struggle for Shreya requires strengthening one's intellect.
