How does Chapter 17 describe the major obstacles to spiritual progress and the attainment of knowledge?

📖 Chapter 17

Chapter 17 identifies several significant obstacles to spiritual advancement. The primary one is beginningless ignorance, or Maya, described as a false imposition that must be dissolved. The chapter explicitly warns that desires for seen and unseen enjoyments, hope, and cravings are obstacles that must be dug out by their roots. Furthermore, lust and anger are highlighted as powerful tendencies that instantly disrupt listening, contemplation, and meditation, thereby preventing the attainment of knowledge. A restless heart and a mind distracted by greed will not find peace, even if one is learned.
