Initially, the villagers of Shirdi considered Maharaj a mad Fakir due to his torn clothes and unusual behavior. However, their perception changed dramatically because of a miracle involving lamps. As detailed in Chapter 0, Maharaj had a fondness for lighting lamps in the Masjid and temples. When the local grocers refused to give him oil one day, he simply filled the lamps with water and lit them. To the astonishment of the onlookers, the lamps lit just as they would with oil and continued to burn all night. This event amazed the villagers, who then surrendered to Maharaj, apologized for their insults, and came to know his true worth.
How did the villagers of Shirdi come to realize that the man they thought was a mad Fakir was actually a great saint?
