According to the introduction in Chapter 0, the figure known as Maharaj was staying at the house of a man named Chandbhai. He traveled to Shirdi by joining the wedding procession of Chandbhai's wife's nephew. The procession stopped in a garden near the Khandoba temple, which Maharaj entered. Inside, he met a goldsmith named Mhalasapati. It was Mhalasapati who first welcomed him with the words "Aavo Sai Baba," which translates to "Come, Sai Baba," thus giving him the name he would be known by forever.
