According to the Introduction in Chapter 0, the name 'Sai Baba' was bestowed upon the Maharaj by a gentleman named Mhalasapati. When the Maharaj first entered the Khandoba temple in Shirdi, Mhalasapati, a goldsmith and devotee of Khandoba, greeted him with the words "Aavo Sai Baba," which translates to "Come, Sai Baba." The Maharaj embraced this name and was known as Sai Baba for the rest of his life. It is noted that when his testimony was taken in a commission and he was asked his name, he replied, "They call me Sai Baba."
