The name 'Sai Baba' was bestowed upon him when he first arrived in Shirdi. As documented in Chapter 0, he traveled with a wedding procession and entered the Khandoba temple. There, a resident named Mhalasapati, a goldsmith by caste, saw him dressed in a kafni and cap. Mhalasapati spontaneously welcomed him with the words 'Aavo Sai Baba,' which translates to 'Come, Sai Baba.' Maharaj held onto this name for the rest of his life. It is noted that when his testimony was taken in a commission and he was asked his name, he simply replied, 'They call me Sai Baba.'
