The conflict within the Tarkhad family stemmed from their different approaches to devotion. The son and mother were supreme devotees of Sai Baba, engaging in personal, ritualistic worship which included offering food to Sai's photograph daily. In contrast, the father, Babasaheb Tarkhad, was a follower of the Prarthana Samaj. This difference created a "great puzzle for the son" when he and his mother wanted to visit Shirdi, as he worried that the sacred daily worship would not be performed correctly in his absence. As described in Chapter 9, the conflict was resolved through a solemn agreement. The son made his father promise to continue the Naivedya offering without fail, stating, "Unless this much is accepted, my going certainly will not happen." Only after his father gave this assurance did the son feel comfortable leaving for Shirdi.
How did the different religious practices within the Tarkhad family create a conflict, and how was it resolved?
