How did Sai Baba's actions and the attitudes of his devotees show that he transcended traditional notions of caste and ritual purity?

📖 Chapter 7

Sai Baba's life demonstrated a complete disregard for the rigid social structures of caste and ritual purity. As Chapter 7 explains, 'caste did not matter even in the slightest degree' to him because he had no ego regarding his body. This is powerfully illustrated by the fact that the 'best of Brahmins' and even Agnihotris, who are keepers of sacred fires, would abandon their pride in ritual purity and prostrate themselves before him. Furthermore, his own behavior reflected this; the chapter notes that he felt no disgust even if a dog put its mouth into the food being served. This acceptance showed he was the same to all, regardless of caste or species.
