How did Sai Baba's actions and appearance make it hard to tell if he was Hindu or Muslim?

📖 Chapter 7

Chapter 7 describes in detail the profound ambiguity surrounding Sai Baba's religious identity. If one considered him a Hindu, he looked like a Yavana (Muslim), yet if called a Yavana, he bore the noble marks of a Hindu. This contradiction was also physical; the text states his ears were pierced, a Hindu custom, but he was also circumcised, a Muslim practice. He resided in a mosque, typical for a Muslim, but kept a sacred fire (Dhuni) burning day and night and allowed the ringing of bells, blowing of conches, and constant bhajans, which are all Hindu traditions. Ultimately, the chapter concludes that he was a holy incarnation beyond both classifications, treating both groups with equal impartiality.
