Chapter 0 explains that Kashiram, a devoted follower, began to feel pride in his ability to give Dakshina to Maharaj. To remove this spiritual obstacle, Maharaj started demanding increasing amounts of Dakshina from him. This continued to the point where Kashiram exhausted his funds and had to borrow from a grocer, who eventually cut him off. This entire leela was designed to make Kashiram realize that he did not possess the inherent power to give. As soon as Kashiram understood this and his pride vanished, his financial condition miraculously began to improve, and he became prosperous once more.
