As described in Chapter 31, Sai Baba's initial reaction to the sannyasi Vijayananda was perplexing and seemingly hostile. After the sannyasi took darshan and was feeling pleased, Baba's disposition suddenly changed. He addressed the assembly and instructed them to "send away this sannyasi," declaring that there was "no companionship for work." For a new devotee who was unfamiliar with Baba's unique and often testing nature, this reaction would have been deeply confusing and distressing. Having traveled to Shirdi with reverence, being met with what appeared to be outright rejection from the famous saint would have been a severe emotional blow.
