When confronted with Dev's complaint, Sai Baba explained that he had indeed attended the ceremony, but in disguise. As detailed in chapter 40, Baba clarified to Jog that he first appeared alone in the guise of a Sanyasi. He then returned at noon for the meal, bringing two other companions with him, just as he had promised. Baba stated, "I said I would come with two others, and I went with two others." Dev served the meal to this Sanyasi and his companions himself but failed to recognize that it was Baba, whose previous purpose had spread a "veil of Maya" over Dev's perception.
