Sai Baba described the author's role as being merely a "pretext" for the divine work of chronicling his life. As detailed in Chapter 2, Sai explained that the author must first dissolve his ego and surrender it completely at his feet. In return for this surrender, Sai promised his full assistance, stating emphatically, "I myself shall write my own story!" and "I should tell my own story and fulfill the devotee's wish."
