The name "Sai Baba" was not his original name but was bestowed upon him when he arrived in Shirdi. According to chapter 0, Maharaj arrived in Shirdi with a wedding procession and went into the Khandoba temple. There, a man named Mhalasapati, a goldsmith and devotee of Khandoba, saw him and welcomed him with the words "Aavo Sai Baba" (Come, Sai Baba). The text states that Maharaj held that name until the end. Further evidence is provided from an instance when his testimony was taken in a commission; when asked his name, he simply replied, "They call me Sai Baba," indicating it was the name others used for him.
How did Sai Baba actually get his name? Was that his original name?
