As Chapter 51 explains, he received a telegram from his father-in-law stating that his mother-in-law was gravely ill. This prompted him to immediately seek Sai Baba's permission and travel with his family to Nagar. Upon arrival, however, he discovered that his mother-in-law's health was perfectly fine.
