How did Dev's perception of the Sanyasi's visit evolve, despite the Sanyasi's original purpose?

Although the Sanyasi had previously come seeking a donation, his return visit for a meal caused Dev's perception to shift. Chapter 40 explains that the Sanyasi's original purpose "spread a veil of Maya," or delusion. Because the Sanyasi and his companions simply came for a meal, Dev's mind fixed on the idea that "He is some guest who has come to get a meal." This thought strengthened his state of delusion, and he proceeded to treat them as honored guests, forgetting his earlier suspicions about the Sanyasi's premature return for money.
