The story of Chand Patil's lost mare is intrinsically linked to Sai Baba's return to Shirdi. According to Chapter 5, Patil was grieving the loss of his mare when he encountered a Fakir (Baba) under a mango tree. The Fakir miraculously told him exactly where to find the horse near some streams. Amazed by this and other miracles, Patil invited the Fakir to his home in Dhup village. Sometime later, a wedding was arranged in Shirdi for Patil's wife's nephew.
