According to Chapter 5, the story begins with Chand Patil, a village head from Dhup who had lost his mare. After a fruitless two-month search, he encountered a Fakir under a mango tree. This Fakir, Sai Baba, displayed his divine nature by first telling Patil exactly where to find his lost animal. Upon Patil's amazed return, Baba performed two more miracles: he pulled a glowing ember from the earth with tongs and then struck the ground with his satka (stick) to bring forth water to prepare a chillum. Awestruck, Patil insisted Baba come to his home. Baba stayed in Dhup for some time until a wedding was arranged for Patil's wife's nephew in Shirdi.
