Dev felt that Baba had broken his promise because he failed to recognize Baba's presence due to the form He took. As Chapter 40 explains, Dev had invited Baba with great love and was eagerly awaiting his arrival. However, his expectation was for Baba to appear in a form he knew. When a Sanyasi and two companions arrived uninvited and were served a meal, Dev did not connect this event to Baba's promise. His mind was clouded by what the text calls a "veil of Maya" and his own preconceptions. In his subsequent letter of complaint, he lamented, "I waited with great effort, but no experience came... it all turned out otherwise; I don't understand this at all." His feeling of being let down stemmed entirely from his own inability to see past the disguise Baba had chosen.
From the perspective of the devotee Dev, why did he feel that Baba had broken his promise to attend the Udyapan feast?
