Dr. Pillay was so tormented by his illness that he wished for death. What was Sai Baba's response to this plea?

📖 Chapter 34

When Dr. Pillay's suffering from guinea-worms became unbearable, he sent a message to Sai Baba saying death would be better and that he would happily take ten more births to suffer his karma later. According to chapter 34, Sai Baba responded with both compassion and a firm rebuke. He questioned Dr. Pillay's despair, asking, "When I am capable of giving liberation, self-interest, or the supreme goal, is this your courage—to ask for the calamity of death?" Instead of granting this wish, Baba proposed a different solution: to share the karmic burden. He instructed, "Bring him here by lifting him. Let us endure this suffering by experiencing it." This shows Baba viewed the wish for death as a misguided plea and offered a way to face the karma in this life with His support.
