Although the physical conditions of the Chavadi were dreadful, staying there offered a profound and rare spiritual benefit. According to Chapter 22, the main advantage was the constant and effortless vision (darshan) of Sai Baba. Because the Chavadi was on Baba's path, Amir got to see Him during His morning alms rounds and again during His evening routines. Most significantly, on alternate nights when Baba stayed in the Chavadi, only a simple curtain separated them. After other devotees left, they would talk with calm minds, providing Amir with a level of companionship with Sai that was a rare fortune.
