Although the Chavadi was physically a place of great discomfort, it offered Amir Shakkar unique spiritual benefits. As Chapter 22 explains, his stay was externally like an imprisonment but internally a 'firm companionship with Sai.' The most significant benefit was that the Chavadi's location provided him with automatic and effortless darshan (vision) of Sai Baba. He could see Baba every morning during the alms rounds and every evening when Baba would come before the Chavadi. Furthermore, on alternate nights when Baba slept there, only a thin partition separated them, allowing them to converse privately after the devotees departed, a rare privilege.
Despite the hardships, what spiritual benefits did Amir Shakkar receive by staying in the Chavadi?
