Just before setting out for the Chavadi, Sai Baba performed a distinct personal ritual. As described in Chapter 37, after getting ready with His kafni, satka, and chilim, and after Tatya Patil had placed a shawl over Him, Baba would approach a bundle of firewood against a wall. He would move His right big toe at that specific spot for a moment. Then, in a significant gesture, He would personally wave His right hand over the burning flame there, extinguishing it. Only after completing this sequence of actions would Sai Baba begin the procession.
