During his first encounter with the Fakir, Chand Patil witnessed several miracles that left him stunned. As Chapter 5 recounts, after the Fakir invited him to rest and smoke, he accurately told Patil where to find his lost mare near some streams. Upon Patil's return with the horse, the Fakir performed more wonders. To light the chillum, he thrust a pair of tongs into the earth and pulled out a glowing ember. Then, needing water to wet the cloth for the pipe, he struck the ground with his short stick (satka), causing water to flow forth. These events convinced Patil that he was in the presence of an 'Avaliya' or saint, not a mere human.
