The miracle of the chillum is a key event from the first meeting between Chand Patil and Sai Baba. After Patil returned with his mare, having found her exactly where the Fakir said she would be, he sat with the saintly figure. As described in Chapter 5, the Fakir, Baba, prepared a chillum with tobacco but needed a light. In a display of divine power, he took a pair of tongs (chimta), thrust them directly into the earth, and pulled out a glowing, live ember. He then placed this ember on the chillum to light it. This act further convinced Chand Patil that he was in the presence of a great 'Avaliya' (saint) and not an ordinary man.
