According to the narrative in Chapter 0, the first encounter between Sai Baba and Chandbhai occurred when Chandbhai, the Patil of Dhupkhede, was searching for his lost horse in the forest. He came across Maharaj, whom he had never seen before, sitting under a tree. Maharaj called out to him, offering a smoke (chillum) and then revealing the horse's location behind a nearby hedge. After Chandbhai found his horse exactly where indicated, he returned to Maharaj. In a display of his powers, Maharaj, needing a fire for the chillum where there was none, struck his tongs on the ground and miraculously produced fire. This initial meeting was so impactful that Chandbhai insisted Maharaj visit his home.
