Chandbhai, the Patil of a village called Dhupkhede, first met Maharaj in a forest while he was distressed and searching for his lost horse. As Chapter 0 recounts, Maharaj, who was sitting under a tree, called out to Chandbhai and invited him to smoke a chillum. When Chandbhai explained his predicament, Maharaj told him the horse was nearby behind a hedge. Chandbhai found the horse exactly where indicated. Following this, Maharaj demonstrated another miraculous ability. As there was no fire in the forest, he struck his tongs (chimta) on the ground, which instantly produced fire for the chillum. This encounter led Chandbhai to insist Maharaj visit his home.
