During Dev's Udyapan ceremony, a Sanyasi appeared. Dev invited him to return for the meal at noon. As detailed in Chapter 40, the Sanyasi returned at exactly twelve o'clock with two companions. All three ate and were thoroughly satisfied. Dev honored them with all the traditional rituals, including sandalwood paste, flowers, and perfume. Despite serving these three uninvited guests in person, the veil of Maya was such that it never occurred to Dev that one of them was Sai Baba. This led to his confusion and doubt, causing him to write to Jog seeking an explanation for why Baba seemingly didn't keep his promise to attend.
