As described in Chapter 15, Cholkar's circumstances were quite modest. He came from a "poor household" where everything depended on his job. To make his position permanent, he needed to pass an examination, without which even his daily bread was at stake. In this state of desperation, he made a vow to Sai Baba, resolving that if he passed by Baba's grace, he would visit Shirdi and distribute sugar candy. His wish was granted, and he passed the exam. However, the fulfillment of his vow was delayed due to his financial struggles. The text poignantly notes that for a worldly man, the "threshold-ghat" of home expenses is a very difficult obstacle to cross, forcing him to push the journey from "today to tomorrow."
