Describe Sai Baba's living conditions and daily routine when he first started living in the mosque.

πŸ“– Chapter 5

Chapter 5 explains that Sai Baba's life in the mosque was one of extreme simplicity. He had a favorite seat where he would remain awake for all twenty-four hours, facing south and looking at the sacred fire, or dhuni. He wore only a loincloth and used the dhuni for warmth. Into this fire, he metaphorically offered his ego, desires, and worldly inclinations. The mosque itself was very small, just two bays, and he used this space for all his activities. Initially, he had no mattress or pillows; these were provided later by devotees. Before the mosque's floor was paved by devotees around 1912, it had knee-deep holes.
