In his early period in Shirdi, Maharaj lived a very simple life. Chapter 0 states that he mostly resided in a dilapidated Masjid, where he would spend his nights. During the day, he would go about the village, and he served the community by giving free medicine. His profound spiritual nature did not go unnoticed by other holy men. The famous Gangagir Baba, upon first seeing him, called him "purely a gem" and told the villagers they were lucky to have him. Similarly, Anandnath Maharaj of Akkalkot, after spontaneously coming to Shirdi, declared that Maharaj was a "diamond" whose true value the local people did not yet understand.
