According to the narrative in chapter 0, when Maharaj first began his work, he actively provided medical assistance to people. He would not only prescribe and give out medicines without ever taking money, but he would also personally go and care for patients who were not being looked after properly. Later, his methods evolved. As he mentioned to the writer, whom he called Kaka, he eventually stopped giving medicine altogether. Instead, he began giving only Udi, or ash, which people found beneficial. He explained this transition by saying, "I used to give medicine to people before.
