While returning from a market, Kashiram was accosted by Bhil robbers. Initially, he did not resist as they took some of his belongings. However, as Chapter 0 narrates, the conflict began when the thieves reached for a small bundle they believed held treasure. In reality, it contained powdered sugar. This bundle was very dear to Kashiram because a saint named Janakidas Baba had advised him to feed sugar to ants. He was determined not to let it go.
