After Cholkar's wish was granted and he passed his exam, there was a delay in fulfilling his vow. Chapter 15 explains that this was due to financial constraints, metaphorically describing the difficulty of crossing the "threshold-ghat" of home expenses for a worldly man. He simply did not have the means for the journey to Shirdi and had to keep postponing it. During this waiting period, Cholkar undertook a personal penance by giving up sugar entirely. He treated sugar as an inedible substance and even drank his tea without it until he could finally travel to Shirdi and fulfill his promise.
