Chapter 23 uses analogies of a parrot in a cage and a pig in a pool. What is the spiritual teaching behind these metaphors?

📖 Chapter 23

In Chapter 23, these analogies illustrate the condition of the human soul deluded by Maya. The pig considering a foul-smelling pool to be supreme happiness, and the parrot loving its cage, represent the soul that has forgotten its true nature. As this chapter explains, the soul, which is truly Existence-Consciousness-Bliss (Sacchidananda), becomes attached to the body and sensual pleasures (the cage and the pool). It mistakes this state of dependence and limitation for happiness and fears the freedom it does not know. The chapter suggests that only when an 'extraordinary master'—the Guru—applies the 'ointment' of knowledge to its eyes can the soul perceive its bondage and realize the wonder of true spiritual freedom.
