Chapter 22 presents a complex view of the Sadguru. How is the Guru portrayed as both the cause of worldly appearance and the means of liberation from it?

📖 Chapter 22

In Chapter 22 of the Shri Sai Satcharitra, the Sadguru is depicted as both the source of illusion and the path to liberation. The text states that before creation, there was a formless state, which is the Guru. Then, through the Guru's power, the 'dim light' of illusion arises, making a rope appear as a fearsome snake. As the chapter eloquently puts it, 'You are also the cause of that illusion.' However, the Guru is also the one who brings the true light of knowledge, revealing the rope for what it is and dispelling the fear. Thus, the Sadguru is presented as the ultimate reality, encompassing the formless, the illusory manifestation, and the final liberation from that illusion for His devotees.
