Chapter 16 presents a seeming paradox: the Guru is desireless, yet accepts service and offerings. How does the chapter reconcile this?

📖 Chapter 16

Chapter 16 resolves this by explaining the Guru's dual role for the benefit of the devotee. While the Sadguru is fundamentally Aptakama (one whose desires are fulfilled) and an 'ocean of Truth, Consciousness, and Bliss,' He dons a 'cloak of ignorance' to impart knowledge to the ignorant. He engages with a disciple's offerings and rituals not for His own fulfillment, but to satisfy the devotee's desire for service and to gauge their faith. As the chapter states, He accepts offerings made with sincere faith with deep satisfaction but rejects those made with pride. This interaction allows the Guru, without transgressing boundaries, to give sweet instruction and guide the disciple toward becoming desireless themselves.
