According to Chapter 0, Kashiram was attacked by thieves who wrongly assumed a bundle he carried contained treasure; it was only sugar for feeding ants. During the ensuing fight, Kashiram was struck with an axe and left for dead. At that very moment in Shirdi, Sai Maharaj became extremely agitated, shouting and swearing. Devotees nearby knew this meant a dear follower was in grave danger and Maharaj was intervening. As Chapter 0 states, "what can the killer do against the Savior?"
