The story of their first meeting is detailed in Chapter 5. A fortunate Muslim man named Chand Patil was grieving the loss of his mare for two months. While returning home disappointed with the saddle on his back, he passed a mango tree and was called over by a Fakir. This Fakir, who was Baba, invited him to rest and smoke a chillum. Upon learning of the lost mare, the Fakir told Patil exactly where to find it near some streams. Amazed, Patil retrieved his mare and realized he had met a great saint, or 'Avaliya'.
