The story of Chand Patil's first meeting with Sai Baba is detailed in Chapter 5 of the Shri Sai Satcharitra. Chand Patil, a resident of Dhup village in the Aurangabad district, had lost his mare and searched for her for two months without success. Feeling completely disappointed, he was heading back with the saddle on his back when he came across a mango tree. Under this tree, he saw a Fakir, who was Baba, wearing a cap and a kafni and preparing a chillum. The Fakir called out to him, invited him to rest, and then miraculously told him the exact location of his lost horse, instructing him to search near the streams. Astonished by this, Chand Patil realized he had met a great saint, or 'Avaliya', and not just an ordinary human.
