Kashiram's financial problems were a direct result of a Leela, or divine play, orchestrated by Maharaj to remove his pride. Chapter 0 explains that Kashiram took pride in being able to give Dakshina. To cure this spiritual obstacle, Maharaj began demanding Dakshina from him relentlessly, even after his money ran out. He instructed Kashiram to borrow from a grocer, which he did until the grocer refused. This experience humbled Kashiram, making him realize he did not truly have the power to give. As soon as he learned this lesson, his financial condition began to improve and he became prosperous once more.
