As detailed in Chapter 9, there was a strict protocol concerning departure from Shirdi that had two important parts. Firstly, it was a known characteristic of the pilgrimage that if a devotee departed without receiving Sai Baba's explicit permission, they were inviting obstacles and difficulties. Secondly, and just as importantly, once Baba gave his permission to go, the devotee was expected to leave immediately and not stay for even a moment longer.
